Wow, how a month flies. Well it has been nearly a month since HPT hosted IMBA's International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. The day happened to correspond with a Trek and Gary Fisher Demo Day so I figured why not add a little more to the mix and have a pump track clinic as well.
As Saturday morning rolled around we had plenty of gift bags, plenty of temporary teeter totters on loan from the gang at BlueDog Cycles/Vernon Trails, plenty of sunshine, and plenty of volunteers...we just needed some kids to show up. In due time they came, but not in the droves we could have handled. We got several group rides rolling as well as some pump track practice and some daring teeter totter sessions. In the end the kids got tons of attention with a near 1:1 volunteer ratio. Thank you to all the volunteers (HPT, UWL trekking club, and otherwise) and to the families that came up to celebrate with us. The Trek trailer, on the other hand, had no shortage of participants. Every time I looked up, I saw a rider on a shiny new bike. Plenty of smiles to be had by all the riders. I even heard a couple of diehard hardtailers mention that they forgot how fun a full sus can be.
As the kiddies went home to mommy, the big boys and girls came out to play on the pump track (yeah right, most adults could stand to learn a thing or two about blind faith in your riding skills from the little groms). We had a decent turnout for the clinic with about 7-8 riders following from the track to the trail. We hit up sections of Twister, Quarry Trail, and French Connection. I think everyone came out with a little more skill and a lot more confidence. We even learned the secret to riding those tight switchbacks when the leaves are wet.
During a post ride gathering at the Alpine Inn, I got a call from some riders coming into town from the Twin Cities. I headed right back to the trail head for a trail ride, pump track photo session, post-dusk bear search, and finished it all off under the lights at the skatepark. I had a tough time riding home from the park due to some severe quad cramping. Guess that means it was a good day.

I would like to thank everyone who came up to the Trek Demo and kids
day. I think it was a huge success and can't wait for the next one.
Gabe and Jed did an outstanding job with the take a kid MTBing. Jed
showed us all how to ride the pump track and all the kids seemed to
really enjoy riding the obstacles.
The Trek demo guys would also like
to thank everyone who came up and made the day fun. They are looking at
coming back this Spring so in case you missed it they'll be back.
Smiths Cycling and Fitness would like to thank all who donated to HPT
with the Brat, Chips, and Soda fundraiser. We ended up with about
$300.00 for a donation to HPT. The day was good the food was good and
everyone had a great time. Thanks again, Erik |

July 3rd Cookout and Bliss Road/HPT Time Trials
Bliss Road is a formidable climb, so to Midwesterners time trialing up it is akin to the Alpe d’Huez TT during the Tour de France. Only five riders showed up to test their mettle this night and the results were close. The course began just past the train tracks at the bottom and turned left on FA at the top. Racers then proceeded to the quarry gate, turned around in the cul-de-sac, and finished at the end of the HPT field, just before the Paulus property. Clara and Mary made up the women’s division, both smiling the entire way. Bob posted a time of 16:05, Trent a 15:37, and I came in at 14:51. Now that there’s a course record someone has to break it!
The HPT TT course was changed to add in the awesome new Quarry Connector Trail, so racers started at the parking lot trail head sign and rode on the road to the cul-de-sac, where they entered the Quarry Connector Trail. Following that section they rode through the pines to the Imberm Trail and followed the usual course. The conditions were beautiful! Since I haven’t ridden my mountain bike more than a handful of times this year my primary goal was to ride smooth and be safe, although I did want to catch Erik , who started a minute ahead of me. I think everyone had a fun, safe ride, and I was able to post the fast time of 41:15 on the new course. Roger was next, only about 30 seconds back.
The real fun began when Aaron started up the grills and handed out beverages. HPT provided some great food and a few others brought some to share. It was great to socialize and catch up with people. Kids were riding up and down the grassy trails and playing in the skills area. The dogs were playing and getting a few table scraps. All too soon, we were witnessing a gorgeous sunset and had to start thinking about cleaning up and heading home. Thank you to Dan, Trent, Aaron, and all others who helped to make it another great HPT gathering!
