Human Powered Trails now has an additional five trained mechanized trailbuilders!
Matt Dotta, Ben Spanel, Bruce VanEpps, Dave Lawrence and Robbie Young all graduated from two full days of mechanized trailbuilding class!
Day 1 on Saturday during the class they learned proper maintenance, as well as the best techniques to operate the Ditch Witch. Throughout the morning Mike Riter of Trail Design Specialists had the participants execute different exercises to become proficient at operating the machine. Lunch was generously provided and delivered by the Radisson Hotel! After lunch... the highlight of the day was a "Ditch Witch Rodeo" competition; where participants were timed going through an obstacle course utilizing the techniques they learned. Including a slalom course, changing attachments, moving small obstacles and manuvering over a log. Congrats to Matt D who won the Rodeo! YeeHaw!
On the morning of Day 2 the class met out on the trail and continued learning while building a reroute to a non-sustainable section of trail that has erosion problems. Everyone got ample machine time and learned the best techniques to build sustainable trail with the Ditch Witch. Mike "Frenchy" Charron and Aaron Schmidt put together a great lunch for all the participants, grilling brats, burgers etc. Class then continued into the afternoon with everyone learning the most efficient ways to build great trail.
HPT now has eight trained machine operators to build more sustainable trail faster and better than ever before! A huge thanks to Mike Riter of Trail Design Specialists as well as all the volunteers that took time out of their busy schedules to learn how to operate the machinery and build more great trails!
