Press Conference at the Human Powered Trails: May 6th, 2008 at 10:00 am. This year, Human Powered Trails Inc. (HPT) received both local and national grants totaling over 40,000 dollars. On May 6th, 2008, at 10:00 am, HPT will host a press day to publicly express our gratitude for the donations granted to our organization. The press conference will be held at the HPT trailhead/parking lot on Cty. Hwy. FA, adjacent to the La Crosse weather station. All members of the press, coulee region citizens, and those interested in our shared-use trail system are welcome to attend. After a few opening remarks by Dan Luebke, HPT board president, a question and answer session will follow. There will also be time for photographs and individual interviews with members of HPT and our supporting organizations. The Human Powered Trails Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to develop and maintain first class sustainable and environmentally correct, human-powered, shared-use trails for the La Crosse, WI region. The funds granted were used to purchase the equipment necessary to carry out this mission. At the press day on May 6th, we will showcase our new “Ditch Witch,” a recently purchased trail building machine that will greatly enhance our ability to expand and improve the existing trail system. |

The Labor Day TT and Pig Roast was a pretty good success. It is great to see so many people show up to ride and just as many to show up because it is a good time. We know that everyone that has participated in the trail work, events, promotion, and rides really deserves to be able to kick back and enjoy the area a little bit once and a while. It is also great to hear from others how that after living in other areas and coming back here they find a much stronger sense of community. Overall a great night.
Children's Challenge

We started out with a kids ride that gave all ages a chance to participate and get a feel as to what it is like to ride off road. The new children's area proved to be challenging for everyone. Milt did a great job making sure everyone had fun. Nice work Milt.
Of course there was the pig roast.
We had a total of about 75 or more people that came out for the events and the food. This was perfect for what we had planned. Even though it was a hot and mosquito infested night people stuck around well after dark. Earl can make a mean pig and with everyone putting in a little effort we had plenty of food for everyone.
It was good to see people from Decorah and Viroqua coming up to ride the trails. We also had a special IMBA guest and his family stop in just for the pig.
So what about the results.
You probably don't see me in this picture because I was too busyfiguring them out for everyone. (Well maybe not.)
Mike did a lot of the work on the timing. After getting eaten alive by mosquitoes during the set up of the event and sweating to death on the course my level of doing anything else had just about stopped.
So with out much more delay here they are.

We attempted to do more than just a time trial for cyclists again this time. We added a bike/run event that had to be pretty darn tough. With the sun going down fairly early now there was a little concern for the finishers near the end of the run. Fortunately they all made it in fine. We also had our first run only event that took in about half of the TT loop. It is a pretty challenging section of trail if you are not use to running hard trails. There is a lot of little ups and downs with rocks, roots, and logs for you to step up and over making it challenging. I know one finisher came across the line and said that it was tougher than the Ironman run. The bike results were pretty good. We had a few flats and a few mechanicals . I myself even found that I was having some issues with my chain. Just what you don't want when the bugs are bad because they become suddenly very bad. Even with some of local favorites sitting this one out so that they didn't miss any of the pig roast we still had a good number of participants. The times may be a little slower because of a few changes in the course, but they are still plenty fast. Nice work everyone!
If you haven't figured it out yet the link above is where the results are posted.
