On the weekend of July 10th Mark Shuttenhelm and Gene Roberts, members of Human Powered Trails and the Coulee Region Patrol, participated in the activities of Camp Bluedog. Camp Bluedog is an annual mountain bike camp for kids organized and sponsored by Pete Taylor of Bluedog Cycles of Viroqua, WI.
This two day camp provides children of the Driftless Region with the opportunity to mentor with skilled cyclists to learn bike handling skills, cycling safety, and to foster the camaraderie of the cycling community. Each camper participated in stations that included skills of climbing, descending, obstacle navigation, balance, stretching and trail building.
Fortunately no serious injuries occurred but CORE patrollers did render minor first-aid and mechanical assistance to campers on the trails. It is events like Camp Bluedog where HPT and CORE can make a difference. Overall the experience was good and anticipates assisting at Camp Bluedog next year.

... Gene and Mark, Thanks from all of of us at Camp Bluedog! We had another great camp this year. Fifty-two kids and twenty-five staff made for a trail network full of riders. As you mentioned, there were no serious injuries but the tech support, band-aids, and ice packs were greatly appreciated. This is a highlight of the summer for a lot of us (not just the kids) and we loved having you. Already lookin' forward to next year. Pete Taylor Bluedog Cycles |
