We're off to a great start with over 230 Early Bird registrations!

We have tons of new additions to the event this year so be sure to keep an eye on the event website (www.browncountybreakdown.com) and the Brown County Mountain Biking Facebook page (www.facebook.com/browncountymountainbiking).

This year we are making the Breakdown as kid/family-friendly as possible. We've added a new Family Fun Ride on Sunday morning. The Family Fun Ride is a great way for families with kids or those who are not yet able to ride the Breakdown routes to join in a fun, casual ride and experience mountain biking on introductory level mountain bike trails. The ride begins at the Start/Finish location and will head directly to the introductory level Pine Loop Trail which is perfect for first time riders of all ages. Pine Loop can easily be ridden both directions and more adventurous riders can even continue on to the North Tower Connector Trail and North Tower Loop, both beginner level trails. There is no cost for the Family Fun Ride and it is open to anyone who would like to participate, however riders do not receive an event t-shirt or hog roast ticket. These additional items can be purchased on the event registration website.

For young riders who are ready to participate in longer distance routes, we've added a new Youth Participant Ticket for riders 15 and under who are participating in the 20, 40, 60, 75 or 100 mile routes. Cost is only $45 and includes camping, event t-shirt and hog roast.

Don't forget we are capping the event at 800 riders so be sure to get signed up in order to guarantee your spot in the 6th Annual Brown County Breakdown ~ HMBA Epic Mountain Bike Ride! Remember this isn't a race, just a great ride in the woods with a few hundred of your closest friends!

The 10th Annual Midwest Mountain Bike Summit returns to Grand Rapids, September 10-12, 2010. Last year, the Summit drew nearly 200 mountain bikers from across the Midwest to Grand Rapids for three days of mountain biking advocacy and festivities, and in the words of Dirt Rag,"Advocacy never tasted so good". With Founders Brewing Company as the title sponsor this year, the 10th Annual Summit will make advocacy taste even better!

So, what is the Summit? The Summit was conceived ten years ago by the Earthriders Mountain Bike Club in Kansas City, Missouri, as a means to promote singletrack advocacy and awareness. In 2005, the Summit began moving east making stops in St. Louis, Missouri (2005-2006) and Peoria, Illinois (2007-2008) before landing in Grand Rapids last year. The Summit has grown with each stop, and now it is the regions premier mountain biking advocacy event/festival.

In keeping with tradition, the first day of the Summit, Friday, September 10, is dedicated to advocacy. The Clif Bar Advocacy Day includes workshops and seminars, including: Better Living Through Trails: The power of mountain biking to improve you community, presented by Leslie and Chris Kehmeier; Developing Urban Trail Systems, presented by Ryan Schutz of IMBA; Tapping Project Resources From a Local University, presented by Professor Carol Griffen of Grand Valley State University; and day one of the two-day IMBA Trail School. New this year is a Friday night Commute Bike Shop urban ride complete with fireworks in downtown Grand Rapids, and a few optional stops at Founders and other local watering holes for refreshments.

Saturday, will have a festival atmosphere, with food, a beer garden, and music provided by local bands. The Founders Brewing Co.'s Festival Day will showcase the Grand Rapids Bike Park, which features a dual lane pumptrack, a developing skills area, a jump line, and 2.5 miles of singletrack with a jump competition, Pump Track Fury, and a Short Track Competition. Attendees may participate in hands-on demonstrations on topics such as pumptrack design and the construction of technical trail features; presented by Aaron Rodgers of the Copper Harbor Trails Club. If the Bike Park is not your thing, shuttles to other area trails will be provided. On Saturday night, attendees may participate in, or watch, the Kisscross Cyclocross race under the lights.

The Summit concludes Sunday, September 12, with an organized epic ride. The ride cover three different trail systems, almost every kind of surface you can ride a bike on (dirt, roads, and paved trails), and over 40 miles of riding. The epic ride is a great way to experience some of West Michigan's finest singletrack.

The good news, it will only cost you $20 to attend, $15 if you are an MMBA member, and $5 for children 15 and under (accompanied by an adult). Even better news, if you sign up for the full three days, we'll throw in a reception dinner on Thursday night for free! Can't make it on Friday, a two-day attendance is $10 and includes clinics, classes, and events on Saturday and Sunday.

Ok boys, "D" and I put down a record lap time of one hour and 21 minutes tonight pre-riding the race course. That puts us at about 3 miles and hour.

Our main concern was to remove all debris from the race course.

There were no trees down, just a lot of branches; about 75 to be exact. As of 8:00pm the trails are clear and race freindly.

Good luck ya'll. May the best team win.

For the locals of La Crosse, this probably doesn't suprize anyone. But for those coming to the Human Powered Trails from out of Town this is some important information. Bliss Road (the road up the Bluff) is closed again due to the summer rains. Attached is a map of the alternate (detour) route to the Human Powered Trails. This detour is about 8.7 miles long. Letter A on the map is the location of where the closure begins. Letter B is the intersection of Losey Blvd and Main Street, take a left here. Letter C is the intersection of Losey Blvd and State Highway 33, take a left here. Letter D is the intersection of State Highway 33 and County Road F, take a Left here. Letter E is the interesection of County road F and County Road FA, take a right here. Letter F is the trail head for the Human Powered Trails, AKA the destination. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Bliss+Rd&daddr=Main+St+NE+to:Losey+Blvd+S+to:WI-33+E%2FWI-33+Trunk+E+to:Co+Rd+F+to:43.821632,-91.191416&geocode=FaGInAIdtzCQ-g%3BFbqDnAIdUBuQ-g%3BFZBJnAIdJhiQ-g%3BFeo_nAIdgCuR-g%3BFaOHnAId2qOQ-g%3B&hl=en&mra=mi&mrcr=4&mrsp=5&sz=16&sll=43.820115,-91.183691&sspn=0.011704,0.019248&ie=UTF8&ll=43.820037,-91.183605&spn=0.093636,0.15398&z=13
